Why
You Should Have a House Sitter
In today’s world, you must think like a
crook in order to prevent unnecessary problems.
Many unsavory characters make it a practice to prey on
people. Unfortunately, the people who choose to live this
way are – for the most part – quite intelligent. They don’t
want to take a chance on breaking into a home that may be
occupied or that you might walk into while they’re ransacking
it. They also want to make certain that they have a better
than average chance of finding something worth stealing.
What better opportunity than a wedding?
Your engagement announcement appears in the paper with
your wedding date listed…..or your banns appear in the church
bulletin……or an opportunistic hotel employee checks the
dates for receptions. Now thieves know when you won’t be
home and it’s a simple matter to find out your address.
And they’re pretty sure you’ll have a nicely displayed assortment
of expensive wedding gifts. This is a ready-made opportunity
for plunder.
Usually, they will make one last check before breaking
in. They’ll call to see if anyone answers the phone and
– if someone does – pretend they have a wrong number. Or
they ring the bell and, if it’s answered, pretend they have
the wrong house. No harm done, as long as someone is there
to answer that phone or door. And for a professional crook,
an alarm system means nothing, especially when he knows
you’re going to be away for awhile.
You need to have someone in your home to make sure thieves
don’t end up with all your lovely gifts. Perhaps you have
a neighbor, a cleaning person, a co-worker – someone who
wouldn’t be at the wedding but that you can absolutely trust
to stay in your parents’ house (or your house, if that’s
where the gifts are) during the rehearsal, wedding and reception.
It’s a simple precaution but one that could save you a
lot of grief.
