Cakes
Choose your wedding cake carefully. If
you look hard enough, you can find a baker who not only
makes a lovely work of art but one that also tastes scrumptious!
Don’t settle for a cake that looks like a masterpiece and
tastes like cardboard……or a delicious cake that just looks
like every other cake. But, if you only have your choice
between the two, pick the delicious one – at least your
guests will eat it!
You should always taste the baker’s cake.
If you let them know in advance the flavor you have in mind,
they should let you taste that flavor. Many bakers copy
cake designs in books, such as the Wilton books. Others
design each cake individually and are extremely artistic
and creative.
Some charge by the slice. Others charge
depending on the amount of work involved in the design you’ve
chosen.
You can decorate your cake in many ways.
A quality baker can provide gum paste flowers but be aware
that these are very time consuming to create and are not
inexpensive. However, if you do not over decorate your cake,
they are not too much costlier than fresh flowers, which
is another way to go. Your florist can advise you what flowers
would work with your cake and blend with the other flowers
being used. Some people purchase top pieces for their cakes.
Some are very lovely, others cheapen the entire look of
the cake. Be careful what you choose, if you’re buying a
top. And be aware that some bakers will not take responsibility
for the top, in case it should break. A number of people
have found it more sensible to place the top on the table
near the cake. This lowers the possibility of breakage.
You can then have a pretty spray of flowers – real or gum
paste – on top of the cake……it makes for a very elegant
look.
Your cake can be all one flavor or a different
flavor for each layer. There are also many filling choices.
If you use several flavors of cake, the cake can actually
become a dessert table after your dinner.
