DJ's
There are lots of choices in d.j.’s. There
are individuals who work by themselves and there are companies
who have many people on their d.j. staffs.
You can request a list of a company’s upcoming
weddings with the understanding that you will stop in at
one of them to see their d.j. in action.
When you go, you must be very unobtrusive.
You should dress like a wedding guest, go about an hour
after dinner when the music has gotten into full swing and,
very quietly, go in and introduce yourself to the d.j. Talk
with him when he has a few moments and then watch him as
he works to get a feel for how he operates. See how he announces
something that is being done. Is it done in good taste or
is he trying to be the whole show? Does he make comments
that are in bad taste? Would he offend any of your guests?
Be very careful not to join into the wedding
party. You are there to observe, not as a guest. Don’t stay
more than an hour at most, don’t get drinks or cake or dance
or mingle with the guests. You wouldn’t want someone coming
into your wedding and crashing the party, so don’t do it
to someone else.
Do you want a d.j. who goes out on the
dance floor and joins in with your guests? Or do you want
one that is professional enough to stay behind his console
and get your guests partying without having to join in?
Does he need a disco ball or other props to get your guests
partying, or is he good enough to make your party swing
without these effects?
Does the d.j. have a wide range of music?
Can he handle all specific requests you might have? If you’ve
asked him not to play something and a guest requests it,
how will he handle this? Can he get ethnic music, if needed?
Does he get there early enough to set up
before any of your guests arrive? How does he dress? He
should be wearing a dark suit or tux. (A female d.j. should
be in dark business clothing that is very unobtrusive and
conservative.)
Will he stay later than originally contracted?
What is his fee for doing this? Does he have backup equipment?
How does he announce the various events during the evening?
If you hire a company with a number of
d.j.’s, be sure to put into your contract that you are hiring
them to provide a specific d.j. If you are hiring an individual,
does that person have a backup in case of illness?
